The Brave World of Live Performance Painting

The finished painting...acrylic on 48 x 48 in canvas

I have always admired the artist who can paint in front of an audience.  Being a self-taught artist who has painted alone for 13 years, I finally decided to break out of my comfort zone and experience my first live performance painting.

Since it takes me so long to paint, I decided it best to have a painting already in progress so I could get as much done as I could at the actual event.  For the first time, I invited my 2 young sons to paint with me.  After laying the drip foundation, they went to work...

The day of the art show arrived, and I set up my easel.  I was very nervous, but had a plan and was prepared to paint.

I chose a portrait of a woman to go with the vintage pinup art in the gallery.  Plus, people are drawn to the human image, so I thought it would be an engaging subject.  I brought a huge 4 x 4 ft canvas so everyone could see.

After sketching and painting the outline of the figure I bravely began the face, the most challenging part.  I felt myself easily able to get into the creative flow while engaging socially with the audience.  It was such great exposure, plus half of the gallery displayed the rest of my collection, so I was there representing my art in full effect...it takes a lot of courage!

I finished the figure at the art show, then added the final details at home.

I love art!  I feel blessed to be able to share it with others!
