Studio Scenes: Painting a Great Horned Owl #2

Remember the Great Horned Owl that I painted for my neighbor (see post here - picture above on right)?  Well, he didn't like it, something about the Owl not having "horns," so I painted him a new one...

I started with a black gessoed canvas, then added the outline with white pencil.

Next, I filled in the outline using the new soft-bodied acrylics that Chroma sent me to test.  Using a simple palette of Yellow Ochre, Carbon Black, and Titanium White, I began to create the owl.

Layer upon layer of paint to create depth, light and shadow...

Usually by now, a background color comes into play, but this time I kept it simply black.

I added the eyes and face details, and then moved on to the feathers using a dry stiff brush.

I am adjusting to using the softer thinner paints, and so my paintings take longer than they used to because I have to add more layers than usual.

I had to remember to interrupt my creative process to photograph the different steps and stages so I could share it with you...

And so, another Great Horned Owl joins the collection of Owls.
I have many plans for this little collection, and hope to add more and more owls to the repertoire.  Right now the collection is hanging at my Art Show at Humboldt Herbals in Old Town Eureka through October.

Wishing you all inspiration and joy, and I will see you back in the studio soon for more art and creative endeavors...
