Sacred Woman Painting Series: Cycles

This painting is part of a series I created about women and infertility.

"Cycles" 2004 acrylic paint on 16 x 20 canvas

This piece portrays a woman in the first stage of healing from infertility, the grieving stage.  The distraught woman feels confined by physical barriers that keep her from mothering a child.  She feels controlled by the cycles of time as she follows the moon in search of hope, yet despairs her cycle of misfortune.  The box encompassing her physical self is splattered with the blood of dying dreams.  She feels isolated and alone.

Yet there is a warm pink aura surrounding her signifying love as well as the essence of a woman, which is so much more than what the box of society tries to impose.  The open clear space is her openness to heal.  Her body extends beyond the flimsy box that attempts to contain her...to break free requires that she simply believe in herself, straighten up, and extend beyond all perceived boundaries.  She is above the full moon, signifying her coming into fullness, ripeness, fertile on levels even beyond the physical.
